Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural plant cannabinoid or phytocannabinoid that can be extracted from Cannabis Sativa L. It is one of over 100 known cannabinoids contained in cannabis. Cannabinoids are a diverse set of chemical compounds that bind to special receptors in the human body. Unlike the widely known cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not have psychoactive or euphoric effects. Further, CBD has the ability to reduce those effects in high CBD to THC ratios.
Cannabinoids interact with our bodies via the Endogenous Cannabinoid System (ECS) more commonly known as the Endocannabinoid System. The ECS is a biochemical control system within our bodies that includes specialized receptors configured to accept certain cannabinoids. It is also the most important physiologic system for establishing and maintaining homeostasis. Cannabinoids that are produced by the body or endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the human body giving them a wide variety of functions.
